Cam Newton is a popular and polarizing figure

Cam Newton has always been one of the most talked about players in football. From his magical season at Auburn to becoming an NFL MVP, the quarterback found himself on both the positive and negative side of media attention.

This makes his hiring one of the easiest ways to bring the spotlight back to HBCUs. Because if there’s been one constant throughout Newton’s career, it’s media attention and articles aplenty despite him playing very little over the last two seasons.

HBCUs have been underrepresented and poorly funded for years. Much like Deion Sanders, Newton can bring attention to the scene.

Newton is beloved by coaches and teammates, and the impact he has made on the various communities he’s touched makes him one of the most watched figures in sports. His unmatched swagger and bravado provide a unique relationship with young men that could potentially rival that of Sanders.

With 1.1 million followers on Twitter and another 4.7 million on Instagram, all eyes are on the former Auburn Tiger. Newton’s reach could bring about even more attention than Sanders, but this is only a small part of the decision-making process when hiring a head coach.

Newton’s natural charisma is similar to that of Sanders. Something that would likely go down extremely well with young hopefuls looking to follow in his footsteps.
