4 potential jobs for Steve Wilks if Panthers look elsewhere in 2023
By Dean Jones
Lions defensive coordinator
The Detroit Lions might be languishing in mediocrity once again. But upon further examination, this is a team right on the cusp of something special providing the right reinforcements are brought into the franchise this offseason.
Dan Campbell is a strong motivator who has his team fighting for every yard. And their win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14 indicates things are trending in the right direction gradually.
Although the Lions’ defense is making strides, there’s something missing in pursuit of getting them over the hump. If Steve Wilks cannot get a permanent promotion from the Carolina Panthers and doesn’t secure another head coaching position, this is someone that could instantly assist in Detroit as defensive coordinator.
Campbell’s no-nonsense, old-school approach seems in keeping with Wilks’ ethos. So it would be a big shock if the two parties didn’t hit it off if fate puts them together.
The Lions have talent on the defensive side of things, it’s the structure more than anything that’s preventing them from becoming a real force. Based on the complete transformation attained by Wilks in Carolina, this would be a slam-dunk hire.
David Tepper would be foolish to let Wilks walk, in all honesty. But if the billionaire cannot see the wood through the trees, then there should be a queue of suitors to choose from.
