Carolina Panthers could change offensive play-caller

This would be a drastic measure so late into the season. But there’s a growing sense that Ben McAdoo‘s lack of adjustments is holding the Carolina Panthers on offense.

It’s been a rough ride for McAdoo since he replaced Joe Brady. His lack of belief in Baker Mayfield meant there was almost no continuity on offense right out of the gate and if the run game isn’t established early, the former New York Giants head coach cannot seem to scheme things up in a progressive manner that is more befitting the modern-day NFL.

Although this would be welcome among large sections of the fanbase, it does seem unlikely. Steve Wilks is a defensive-minded coach with no offensive play-calling experience, which might get McAdoo a reprieve with a threadbare coaching staff providing little in the way of alternatives.

Even though McAdoo is set to remain the shot-caller under Wilks’ supervision, these three games will be his last in Carolina. The prospect of a new head coach coming into the fold means he’ll be on the outside looking in and should the current interim remain at the helm, then acquiring someone with more invention would be the best avenue to go down moving forward.

Just what that means for McAdoo’s overall NFL future is uncertain. But he’s not done nearly enough to warrant an extended stay with the Panthers and there won’t be many tears shed when his departure is confirmed.
