What major concerns that emerged in Week 15 must be removed when the Carolina Panthers welcome the Detroit Lions to Bank of America Stadium?

After an encouraging run of results prior to their Week 15 clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers, many believed the Carolina Panthers had the NFC South lead right within reach. However, a lackluster performance with the pressure on was a significant step back for a franchise that’s made encouraging strides since interim head coach Steve Wilks replaced Matt Rhule.

This was a blow and expectations are now lower as a result. But the Panthers are still one game back of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and control their own destiny, as bizarre as that might be.

Carolina hasn’t won three straight since their impressive start to the 2021 campaign. So it’s not hard to see why there is real skepticism about the possibility and especially considering how well the Detroit Lions are playing of late.

Looking ahead to the contest, here are three major problems that must be eradicated in Carolina’s home finale on Christmas Eve.

Major Concern No. 1

Carolina Panthers 3rd down defense

The Carolina Panthers’ defense was a bright spot during their recent resurgence. However, they fell by the wayside versus a Pittsburgh Steelers team that was missing starting quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Mike Tomlin knew exactly where to attack the Panthers. The Steelers converted 12 of their 16 third-down attempts, which won’t go unnoticed by the Detroit Lions and their outstanding offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Johnson’s offense is firing on all cylinders and he’s rapidly emerging as a potential head coaching candidate in 2023. This is a stern test for the Panthers and one they must pass to stand any chance of winning their last regular-season contest at Bank of America Stadium.
