4 major observations from Sam Darnold’s performance vs. the Lions

Sam Darnold’s turnover-free streak continued
One of the biggest flaws associated with Sam Darnold throughout his time in the NFL is turnovers. The signal-caller’s rash decisions got him traded from the New York Jets and things didn’t get better with the Carolina Panthers, which led to the organization drafting Matt Corral and securing Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns.
This has not been the case since Darnold became the team’s No. 1 once again. It was his final chance to prove he can successfully lead Carolina under center, which has brought a level of calmness that’s been seldom seen during his five-year career to date.
In addition to Darnold’s lofty numbers, he was turnover-free for the fourth straight game. This is his longest such streak since being drafted No. 3 overall in 2018 and a complete turnaround from anything we’ve witnessed previously.
The legend of ‘Bearded Darnold’ is growing. It’s just a small thing, but the new facial hair is becoming a superstition propelling the quarterback to the best stretch of his pro career.
How much longer this can continue remains to be seen.
Darnold is riding on the crest of a wave right now. If the player continues making the right calls and being efficient under center, there’s just no telling what the Panthers can accomplish.
