Sam Darnold looks on track for a new deal

The general consensus seemed to almost guarantee Sam Darnold would be moving on once his rookie contract concluded. But with just two games remaining, things are far from certain in that regard.

Darnold’s production and enhanced maturity are leaving a positive impression. More importantly, he’s leading the Carolina Panthers on an outstanding run of form to close the campaign that might end with a shock divisional title for good measure.

While his previous four years in the league wouldn’t hold much optimism, there’s something different about Darnold this time around. Something that could lead to a new contract when it’s all said and done.

Spotrac projects Darnold’s market value to be $5.1 million annually on a two-year, $10.2 million deal. This would provide the franchise with a solid bridge option while Matt Corral or a new prospect from the college ranks gets up to speed.

This is a remarkable change of fortunes for Darnold all things considered. Even if the Panthers opt to go in a completely different direction, the quarterback’s done more than enough to suggest an opportunity might be forthcoming elsewhere in free agency.

The Panthers are still in with a shot. Losing Jaycee Horn is a body blow, but Darnold’s production so far means he might not be the problem, after all.
