Brian Burns – Carolina Panthers DE

Even though his subpar performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came at the worst possible time, there’s no denying how important Brian Burns is to the Carolina Panthers moving forward. The defensive end is the only consistent pass-rushing presence currently on the roster and now there is nothing to play for other than pride, keeping the Florida State product out of harm’s way should be considered.

Burns is in a strong position when it’s time to begin contract negotiations in the coming weeks. The Panthers turned down a huge trade offer from the Los Angeles Rams before the deadline, with his second-straight Pro Bowl appearance another factor that could put extra dollars on his demands.

With that being said, the NFL is a violent business. And the tragic events surrounding Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin put into perspective how things can change in the blink of an eye.

What’s the point in Burns jeopardizing his hopes of a lucrative contract with nothing on the line at the New Orleans Saints? This would also provide the Panthers an opportunity to see what they have in Amare Barno, their 2022 sixth-round selection who’s been seldom seen throughout his rookie campaign.

Burns is competitive enough to be out there and in all likelihood will be. But the thought of sitting out Carolina’s final fixture must enter his and the team’s train of thought all things considered.
