4 lively outsiders to be the Carolina Panthers first-round pick in 2023

Carolina Panthers could draft Myles Murphy
- Defensive End | Clemson Tigers
As stated previously, if the Carolina Panthers cannot land their chosen quarterback, then looking at the premier defensive ends will be considered by those in power. It might be unpopular given the significant needs under center, but general manager Scott Fitterer won’t hesitate if he feels like it’s the right thing to do.
One of the most talented edge rushers entering the NFL also has the scope to break Carolina’s streak of never selecting a player from Clemson. Myles Murphy has the build, athleticism, and physicality normally associated with productive pass-rushers at the next level, so expect to hear his name called relatively early when the time comes.
Murphy’s unique blend of size, length, and power is difficult to stop. This is matched with a relentless motor that allows the player to close down space extremely efficiently.
Once he refines and enhances his pass-rushing repertoire, someone is getting an absolute stud this spring. Carolina needs a signal-caller desperately – more than anything else by far – but pairing Murphy with Brian Burns has all the makings of a dominant pairing for years to come.
It would be a surprise, for sure. But Fitterer plays the draft board well and if he doesn’t feel like the available quarterbacks at No. 9 are worth the risk, he’ll pursue alternatives.
