Another element to watch within Ejiro Evero’s defensive scheme is utilizing six defensive backs early and often during games. However, the Carolina Panthers are not blessed with great secondary depth and this is something the front office must address during another important offseason for the franchise.

Adding to the group via free agency or the 2023 NFL Draft is almost guaranteed. Evero’s arrival could also signal a return for Myles Hartsfield – the versatile defensive back who once again formed a key part of the rotation last time around.

Hartsfield emerged quickly from an undrafted free agent afterthought onto the roster. The former Ole Miss star turned out in 79 percent of Carolina’s defensive snaps in 2022, giving up 71.4% of targets thrown his way and a concerning 120.4 passer rating for good measure.

While Hartsfield might never become a prolonged, productive NFL starter, signing him to a short-term deal gives Evero continuity and versatility. Although it’s probably nothing more than a cheap depth piece when push comes to shove.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Panthers moved on from Hartsfield entirely, even if he is a restricted free agent. But his chances of another deal have no doubt increased thanks to Evero’s arrival.
