Matt Ioannidis – Carolina Panthers DL

If the Carolina Panthers are set to move forward with a 3-4 base that can be easily switched, then they need a defensive line that can pull it off. Something those in power need to mold in the weeks ahead.

Brian Burns would likely revert to a 3-4 outside linebacker within Evero’s scheme. This leaves them short on the defensive line unless significant reinforcements are secured before competitive action commences.

Offering veteran lineman Matt Ioannidis a new contract should be discussed. The former Temple star made a quality impression alongside Derrick Brown in 2022 and has the frame to operate as a 3-4 defensive end if Evero sees fit.

Ioannidis has proven NFL credentials and emerged as a leader within the locker room during his first season in Carolina. There was some trepidation surrounding his arrival thanks to Matt Rhule’s former college players failing to meet expectations, but concerns were alleviated early on despite suffering one or two injuries along the way.

While the Panthers would benefit greatly from Ioannidis sticking around, this could depend on how much the player wants and for how long on his new deal. Carolina isn’t blessed with much salary-cap space currently, so it’ll be interesting to see if something can be worked out between all parties.
