Shaq Thompson – Carolina Panthers LB

The topic of Shaq Thompson‘s future has been a contentious one among fans over the last year. While the veteran linebacker remains a highly-productive performer and is one of the undisputed locker-room leaders, the $24.46 million salary-cap hit coming his way in 2023 means things could go either way.

Thompson recently discussed this when interacting with fans on social media. It seems like the former first-round selection wants to remain in Carolina, but he also acknowledged that the NFL is a business and is waiting to see how things play out.

"“Nothing going change my mindset. It’s a business at the end of the day! No hard feelings! Whether I’m here or not! Ima root for this team and my brothers!! Best believe ima be here!!! We can work something out. Would you take a pay cut at your job?”"

Obviously, the financial aspect must work for both the player and the Panthers. However, slotting Thompson into Ejiro Evero’s 3-4 scheme as an interior presence would be a tremendous asset.

His ability to read offenses pre-snap came on a significant amount in 2022. Thompson wouldn’t be tasked with many coverage duties in this role, which is the best way to maximize what he brings between the white lines.

Thompson is one of the last remaining players from Carolina’s run to the Super Bowl. While his departure would be a blow, it cannot be ruled out when factoring everything into the equation.
