5 draft prospects Ejiro Evero might want for the Panthers defense in 2023

Carolina Panthers could draft Sydney Brown
- Safety | Illinois Fighting Illini
If the Carolina Panthers want to deploy six defensive backs on occasion within Ejiro Evero’s system, then it’s clear more depth is required. Especially on the backend if the new defensive coordinator ends up moving Jeremy Chinn closer to the line of scrimmage.
Xavier Woods should play a key role as a reliable safety presence and strong communicator. But adding to this group via free agency or the 2023 NFL Draft is important with almost no consistent depth on the roster currently.
Perhaps someone like Sydney Brown could be among the contenders in the mid-rounds. The physical safety has ballhawk capabilities if his six interceptions during his final college campaign at Illinois is any indication, with the prospect also boasting enough size and physicality to become a key rotational piece immediately.
Brown is a fierce tackling presence with good awareness. He does struggle in zone schemes on occasion and footwork is another issue that needs improvement before his rookie campaign.
With that being said, this could be a high-value selection if he makes it to Day 3. Brown is a hard worker and learns quickly, which would allow the Panthers more flexibility when it comes to putting Chinn in better positions heading into the final year of his deal.
