4 Carolina Panthers entering the 2023 offseason on a short leash

Matt Corral – Carolina Panthers QB
Matt Corral isn’t Frank Reich’s pick. When it comes to the quarterback position and the head coach, in particular, this is huge.
Reich consistently was shuffling quarterbacks in and out of the Indianapolis Colts lineup looking for the perfect fit for his offense. Ultimately this is what led to his enforced removal and landing with the Carolina Panthers.
Corral is in the second year of his rookie contract and offers cheap depth at the position. However, to earn any real chance at the starting job, the former third-round selection must be nearly perfect in every part of the game.
It will be an uphill battle for a player who while an unlikely cut, isn’t going to have a clear path to the starting role or backup job as Reich puts his stamp on his Panthers team. This all starts with the position that has elevated his career as a coach.
Corral’s future with the team will be determined in camp and preseason. Much will depend on how the signal-caller returns from a serious foot injury that ended his rookie campaign before it began, but fighting as the third string looking to prove that last year’s preseason disaster was a fluke seems like the likely scenario.
