Examining the 3 largest Carolina Panthers scheduled cap hits in 2023
By Nick Halden
Taylor Moton – Carolina Panthers OT
- $24.54 million cap number in 2023
- $11.4 million in savings (restructure)
- Contract expires in 2026
Taylor Moton is one of the better right tackles in football. Combined with the recent history of the Carolina Panthers offensive line, paying him as such was an easy decision.
Moton is clearly a building block for this team and will cover up a lot of issues on offense. He did struggle on occasions in 2022, but it was another season of consistent production from the reliable veteran.
As tough as this year’s cap hit might be, it is worth the stability Moton brings to the offensive line overall. Carolina’s protection improved last season with Steve Wilks getting the best out of the group and the former second-round selection demonstrated why he belongs at the top of the team’s cap hits.
Moton’s base salary is only $11 million, so there could be some significant savings for Carolina to contemplate with a restructures this offseason. Kicking the financial can down the road is commonplace in today’s NFL and if the Panthers went in this direction, they’re projected to get another $11.14 million to spend elsewhere.
This is something the Panthers should consider providing Moton agrees. And unless there is a steep drop-off in projection before his contract expires in 2026, there’s a high chance he gets another deal before this one concludes.
