The start of 2022 was a disaster for the Carolina Panthers, so much so that Matt Rhule, and Baker Mayfield for that matter, lost their jobs.

Steve Wilks and Sam Darnold were nearly able to carry Carolina in the postseason in the worst division in football, but fell short against Tom Brady and finished the year 7-10.

Now, Tom Brady is gone, the division is wide open and the Panthers have a new head coach.

Welcome to Charlotte Frank Reich.

Reich lost his job in Indianapolis in large part because he never had a young quarterback and he got the job in the first place for his ability to develop a young quarterback, Carson Wentz (when he was still good).

The Panthers can’t make the same mistake the Colts did. They need to get Reich a young quarterback in the draft and if he pops in year one then they could become an overnight contender.

Super Bowl 58 Odds

Can we please get Frank Reich a young QB?

There is a lot to like about this Panthers roster.

They won seven games with a combination of Baker Mayfield, PJ Walker, and Sam Darnold. That’s hard to do no matter how bad the division is around you. They have a good offensive line, an elite receiver in DJ Moore, a talented young defense, and are in a good spot with the salary cap.

The future is bright in Carolina, but the Panthers have to avoid the pitfalls of another retread veteran quarterback. It’s time to cash in assets and go up in the draft to get the franchise QB.

If the Panthers get it right at quarterback then they could be a playoff team next year, even with a rookie, but rookies don’t win Super Bowls.

No rookie has ever even made it to the Super Bowl. So Carolina is a couple years away.

I wouldn’t bet the Panthers to win it all, but if this franchise was a stock, I’m buying. As long as they don’t make Reich suffer with Derek Carr after he got stuck with Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, and Matt Ryan year after year in Indy.
