Bryce Young's first half
Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Carolina Panthers during an embarrassing first half. Bryce Young barely got any time on the field in the first quarter, and aside from a couple of flashes, it was nowhere near good enough.
Young had one exceptional highlight: a gorgeous pass to tight end Darren Waller for a 50-yard touchdown. At one stage, he had a 133.3 passer rating when the Panthers were down 20, but an interception in the second quarter brought that down considerably.

The signal-caller was looking for wide receiver Jalen Coker on a hitch route. The Holy Cross product slipped, but the route was being jumped anyway. Young didn't see it well enough, and the Panthers paid the price.
This was the tale of a disastrous first half from the Panthers. Young wasn't without blame, which was reflected in his stats from the opening two quarters.
- 63.64 percent completion (7/11)
- 95 passing yards
- 1 touchdown
- 1 interception
- 1 fumble lost
- 0 rushing yards
- 83.5 passer rating (ESPN)
The Panthers were so sloppy. It was a complete failure, and the Buccaneers took full advantage.
Nobody expected this after being in such good form heading into the contest, but they only had themselves to blame.
Bryce Young's field vision
Bryce Young is a sound processor and an intelligent presence under center. His decision-making has improved significantly this season, and the game seems to be slowing down for him.
Unfortunately, all that vanished against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As mentioned earlier, the Buccaneers put Young under sustained pressure. But even when he got some rare time in the pocket, he just wasn't seeing the field very well.
Tampa Bay's disguised coverages gave Young problems throughout. His two interceptions were evidence of that, and there was a hesitancy around pocket presence that hasn't been evident much over the first five games of the campaign.
Hopefully, this will be just a blip rather than the start of anything more concerning.
Nothing much went right for the Panthers, and Young was dragged down by the stench. But when he looks back on the film, he'll know that he should have been reading things more effectively to give himself a fighting chance.
The Buccaneers just had Young and the Panthers right where they wanted them. Nothing clicked, and something just felt off almost immediately. But the signal-caller's big mistakes came when the contest was almost out of sight.
That's how bad things got early at Bank of America Stadium.
