Bryce Young's first half
Aside from a very late interception, thanks to a sensational play from Chicago Bears rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad, Bryce Young's first half was nothing short of outstanding.
One could even argue it was the best first half of his professional career to date.
Almost everything Young did seemed to pay off. The Carolina Panthers had to rely on him heavily due to the lack of a ground game and the Bears getting whatever they wanted offensively, but the former Alabama standout answered the call.
Young was surgical. There was a nice balance of explosive plays and short to intermediate gains. The Bears found it extremely difficult to counter his threat, and without a couple of frustrating penalties in key moments, things would have been even better.
The Panthers may have been down at the half, but that was not on Young. He kept Carolina competitive. If the defense had produced at this sort of level, it would have been a completely different story.
This was reflected in Young's first-half stats, which were highly impressive.
- 68.75 percent completion
- 193 passing yards
- 2 passing touchdowns
- 1 interception
- 7 rushing yards (1 rushing touchdown)
- 118.0 passer rating (ESPN)
If this was the start of things to come, Young's notoriously slow starts will quickly become a thing of the past.

Bryce Young's connection with Jalen Coker
All of the hype has been on second-year wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan after his sensational rookie campaign, but the Panthers also have Jalen Coker to depend on. The 2024 undrafted free agent got a lucrative contract extension from Carolina this offseason, and the growing chemistry between the pass-catcher and Bryce Young was a notable highlight in Week 1 against the Bears.
When the Panthers needed a big play, Young looked for Coker. The Bears focused on keeping McMillan quiet, which let the Holy Cross product prove he is much more than a complementary piece.
Young's timing with Coker was excellent. The first half was loaded with highlights, including a 51-yard touchdown. The wideout got open on the sideline, and the signal-caller put it right into his stride for a score that shook Bank of America Stadium to its foundations.
Coker eventually finished the day with eight catches for 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Young trusts him fully, and both players are growing together as fledgling stars in Carolina.
It's been a long time since the Panthers have had a legitimate 1-2 punch at receiver. If Coker can stay healthy, he could be the spark that takes Young's game to completely new heights if this first effort is any indication.
