Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker is making encouraging progress from a quad injury. However, head coach Dave Canales doesn't believe his participation in Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles is guaranteed just yet.
That means a few big days await.
Coker didn't expect to miss much time. He left Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns early, and despite pushing hard to feature, the Panthers opted not to risk the gifted pass-catcher during their Sunday Night Football triumph over the Detroit Lions.
Carolina Panthers are giving Jalen Coker a shot to prove his fitness for Week 6
Though disappointing, the Panthers were playing the long game.
And they were right.
If Coker aggravates the injury and is out for longer, that will be much more detrimental to Carolina's aspirations this season. He's an integral part of the team's plans now, and the Panthers are treating him as such.
He's a franchise cornerstone after signing a contract extension during the offseason. Coker's production over the last two years also suggested that a genuine breakout is possible if he can stay on the field.
Missing one game isn't a big deal. Anything more would be more problematic, but Canales said he's progressing well, and the Panthers will see how he copes when things ramp up before determining his status this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles, one way or another.
“He had a great bye week. He continued to ramp up every day with some rest in there as well. But Jalen's on track. He's got a couple of big days ahead of him. I'll give you more information as the week goes on, but we'll get a great opportunity to get on the field and to take a look at some things and then see if we can continue to progress.”
Carolina Panthers need Jalen Coker on the field against Eagles' powerful cornerbacks
It's a wait-and-see situation, but Coker will be doing everything possible to feature at Lincoln Financial Field. And with the cornerback trio of Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Riq Woolen to overcome, Carolina needs the Holy Cross product in the lineup.
The Panthers' offense is better when Coker is making plays.
He's the perfect complement to Tetairoa McMillan, and Carolina now has one of the league's best young receiving tandems. With offensive coordinator Brad Idzik running a more aggressive scheme, both are flourishing as quarterback Bryce Young also takes the next step.
The season is still early, so the Panthers can err on the side of caution if needed. Coker won't like it, but it's an option.
And the Panthers are giving him a chance.
Coker will be among the players Carolina fans will be monitoring closely throughout the week.
Right tackle Taylor Moton and defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton have had their 21-day return windows opened, as has running back Trevor Etienne. They have some other concerns, but the Panthers are getting healthier at an important time.
And if Coker does enough to get the all-clear for Carolina's game against the Eagles, that will be the biggest morale boost imaginable.
