The Carolina Panthers picked up their first preseason victory with a polished all-around display against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But for wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr., he all but secured much more than just a warm-up triumph.

There was speculation around Horn's status coming into his second offseason with the franchise. The Panthers had plenty of competition for places, and the 2025 sixth-round pick needed to make significant improvements to justify his place on the squad once again.

Thankfully, this raised urgency has brought a positive response.

Jimmy Horn Jr. has surged above Carolina Panthers' rostter bubble with outstanding preseason

Horn has been among the standouts throughout Carolina's preparations for the new campaign. There is an added sharpness to his approach that hasn't gone unnoticed, and the improvements in his route-running are another big positive to build on.

More importantly, Horn is coming through when it counts during Carolina's warm-up slate.

He's maximized almost every carry or target. Horn is elusive with the football in his hands, and his ball-tracking has progressed exponentially. Doing it in camp is one thing, but being reliable in a live-fire setting is something else entirely.

While Horn's place on the 53-man roster hasn't been officially confirmed, it's hard to ignore the signs. He's demonstrated the right work ethic and growth, which are typically rewarded by head coach Dave Canales. And don't be surprised if he gets his fair share of involvement with offensive coordinator Brad Idzik calling plays.

Horn has skills. He's fast, versatile, and if schemed around correctly, looks more than capable of making a lasting contribution. He might not ever be a legitimate WR1, but the Panthers don't need him to be.

Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker are the established 1-2 punch. They will be a dynamic duo if they meet expectations, but if Horn can emerge as a complementary piece, it will add a different dynamic to Carolina's offense.

The Panthers have others vying for involvement.

Veteran wideout John Metchie III also shone against the Jaguars. Established pro David Moore has the full trust of Canales, and Brycen Tremayne offers special-teams value. But with 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette in a walking boot after suffering a foot injury, there could be chances for those a little further down the pecking order.

And now, Horn might be at the front of the queue.

This is an immensely positive development for both Horn and the Panthers. His rookie season was a learning experience, and he has taken some harsh lessons to heart to come out on the other end smiling.

And if the same trend continues during the regular season, the Panthers may even have a sixth-round steal on their hands when it's all said and done.

Wouldn't that be something?
