The Carolina Panthers' defense allowed 59 points and 552 total yards in an embarrassing Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears. That was all general manager Dan Morgan needed to speed up linebacker Tyrel Dodson's introduction to the active roster.
And it's not hard to see why.
After being signed to the practice squad after final cuts, ESPN insider Adam Schefter confirmed that Dodson is now part of the 53-man squad. The Panthers need to make a corresponding move, but Morgan and head coach Dave Canales believe they need another experienced presence at the second level.

Dodson's arrival is intriguing. He comes to Carolina off the best campaign of his professional career with the Miami Dolphins, logging five sacks and 129 tackles. He signed a new deal this offseason, but the AFC East club made him surplus to requirements during final cuts.
Though disappointing at the time, it might also have been a blessing in disguise for Dodson.
Especially if he manages to feature in Carolina's linebacker rotation immediately.
Devin Lloyd was the marquee offseason addition, but he was somewhat disappointing against the Bears as he began his stint in Carolina. Bobby Okereke joined late in the summer and flashed in Week 1. But aside from Claudin Cherelus and seventh-round rookie Jackson Kuwatch, the cupboard is relatively bare.
That's where Dodson comes in.
The former Texas A&M standout is experienced, but he is still just 28 years old. This should be Dodson's prime, giving the Panthers another energetic presence with the versatility to play inside or even rush from the edge in the right situation.

Carolina will likely roll with Lloyd and Okereke as the starting tandem. But when defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero switches alignments, or either projected starter needs time off the field, Dodson can make an impact when his number is called.
It may not be spectacular. But it will certainly be an upgrade over either Cherelus or Kuwatch.
This also sends a strong message to the players. Their dismal defensive effort versus Chicago will not be tolerated moving forward. This cannot become the standard, and Morgan will have no trouble shaking things up if he believes it's necessary.
If that doesn't raise urgency, nothing will.
Dodson can make plays. He can get around the football. He communicates effectively, and he's got versatility. That looks well-suited to Evero's schematic concepts, and Carolina signing him now means his veteran contract is not guaranteed.
There are some deficiencies. Dodson isn't the strongest in coverage, giving up a perfect passer rating of 158.3 last season. Missed tackles can sometimes be an issue, but in fairness to the player, he notably cleaned up technically in 2025.
It's not costing the Panthers much to find out one way or another just how much Dodson can feature. But if this move can bolster the defensive stability behind Evero's 3-4 front, it should help.
And after last weekend's debacle, something had to be done.
