NFL Draft: Grading each Panthers pick
Round Two #62 Overall: James Bradberry: Samford CB
Grade: B-
Why: Bradberry is a good size corner who can tackle well and should fit into what McDermott is trying to accomplish on defense. However, while he may fit into the system it remains to be seen if he is the player who will replace Pro Bowler Josh Norman on the outside.
Bradberry was projected to be drafted in the middle to late rounds so his selection on Friday may have come as a surprise to some, but with no guarantees and the obvious need, he was bumped up and landed in Carolina. The transition to the NFL could be of concern with his level of competition, but Bradberry’s size, length, and speed should correlate well at the professional level. He also can play safety in a pinch which increases his appeal.
The beginning of Gettleman’s three selections to bolster training camp competition and find Norman’s replacement, Bradberry is a raw talent that if developed properly could emerge as the front-runner in August.
Next: Another cornerback?
