Garrett Gilbert appears to be the favorite for the Carolina Panthers backup quarterback spot…

For those wondering who the No 2 quarterback may be heading into training camp, your question may be answered. Per Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, Garrett Gilbert is Ron Rivera’s favorite for the second spot heading into training camp.

Gilbert did not see any action for the Carolina Panthers in 2017.

More from Cat Crave

He has bounced around the league for a number of years, struggling to find a home. His career began with the (at the time) St. Louis Rams in 2014. After signing him that June, they waived him on August 30, and cut him the following day. Signed to the Rams practice squad on September 1, 2014, he would be waived from the practice squad on October 28 of that year.

The New England Patriots would be the ones to come calling next, adding him to the practice squad in December. They signed him on February 5, 2015 and he would stay on the roster until June 11. Gilbert was picked up by the Detriot Lions the following day and he would stay with the team until he was cut that September. After a quick stint with the Oakland Raiders, Gilbert ended up with the Panthers. If anything, he came to Carolina hoping to add some stability to his career.

Ron Rivera putting Gilbert as the favorite for the No. 2 spot is interesting on many levels. For one, I figured the team would wait a bit before making any predictions as to who the backup would be.  Although training camp is around the corner, an endorsement from Rivera certainly works in Gilbert’s favor.

Secondly, this probably means that former backup Derek Anderson will have to find work somewhere else. This has been something that has been rumored to be happening for a few months now. From this latest development, it appears Anderson may have to find another place of employment.

Garrett Gilbert as the No. 2 quarterback may not necessarily excite fans but he is at least owed the opportunity to compete. This may (finally) be the year where he can really show what he is made of.
