Panthers: Marty Hurney and David Tepper are clicking , and that’s a great thing
The two top members of the Carolina Panthers organization are starting off on the right foot…..
It is always good when two of the top employees in the Carolina Panthers organization are on the same page.
Meeting with the media on Wednesday, general manager Marty Hurney opened up about his relationship with new team president David Tepper and if he has had a chance to spend time with his new boss.
"Yes. I’ve had several meetings. We talk, you know, on a very regular basis and I think everybody’s got the same vision. It’s to come in and win football games and with a goal of winning the super bowl."

Although it may seem like Hurney is just toting the company line, it is good that the pair is at least talking to each other on a regular basis. This goes back to the open lines of communication that Tepper stressed in his introductory press conference. The latter wants to establish a new culture for the entire Carolina Panthers organization. From Tepper’s perspective, by talking with your general manager every day, that sets up a strong relationship. That way, the two of you can be on the same page as you both work towards one common goal.
I would imagine that it also helps when Hurney has constructed a roster that is ready to win the Super Bowl right now. If anything, Ron Rivera, Hurney, and Tepper now have a lot to work with. Surely, this makes the lines of communication much smoother. It also validates what Hurney did in the offseason as prior to this, he did not know the type of personality the new owner was going to have. Coming from the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning is in Tepper’s blood and it appears he will not accept anything less. That is a very good thing.
The most interesting this as I see it will be once the regular season starts. Will the open lines of communication still be there? My guess is that they will be. Things are definitely a lot more fast-moving in the regular season, and with the fate of people’s jobs hinging on the next game, there can be some tense moments. In a sense, that’s why the communication lines and the good relationship is important. In the cutthroat world of the National Football League, transparency is key.
It will be interesting to see how the Hurney-Tepper dynamic plays out. It should be viewed as a positive thing, and a drastic change from prior years.
