New ownership capped an offseason filled with changes for the Panthers from top to bottom. David Tepper took over as the sole owner in Carolina for founder Jerry Richardson just prior to training camp and already has made his mark on the franchise.
A familiar face at camp, Tepper is expected to be on hand when the Panthers kick off play inside Bank of America Stadium on Friday night and all eyes will be on midfield. Richardson elected to paint the NFL shield logo on the 50-yard line every year as a sign of appreciation to the league for awarding he and Charlotte a franchise nearly 25 years ago.
Many fans have wanted to see the Panthers logo adorn the field and Friday night may provide that opportunity. However, Carolina could also be waiting for their home opener, their first since 2013, against the Dallas Cowboys to unveil such a unique and much anticipated change.
If so, then don’t expect to see either the shield or a logo on midfield Friday night. If the turf remains blank, then the excitement surrounding what exactly will be present on September 9 will continue to mount.
Either way, it adds one more aspect of intrigue to a preseason game as the regular season approaches.
