Graham Gano drilled a 63-yard field goal last week for the win and missed his first opportunity, an extra point attempt, following. The miss kept Carolina down 11 and forced them to convert a two-point try in the second half.

Rookie wide receiver D.J. Moore failed to down a punt which would have pinned Washington back deep on their first possession before fumbling his first return opportunity. Carrying the ball away from his body, the Redskins knocked the ball loose and then scored a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage following.

Penalties also hurt Carolina in the field position game related to special teams. For a unit that had been a Panthers highlight through the first four games, this group struggled considerably on Sunday.

Overall, it was a disappointing performance but one that Carolina needs to move on from quickly as they face the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on the road next week.
