Panthers make great move hiring Everette Brown as LBs assistant
The Carolina Panthers made the move Friday.
The Carolina Panthers are bringing back a familiar face to help coach the team in 2019. According to multiple media reports the Panthers have hired Everette Brown as the assistant linebackers coach. As you may remember, Brown was drafted by the Panthers in the second round of the 2009 draft. Most recently, he spent last year’s training camp as an intern for the team.
Hopefully, his coaching resume will be better than his playing resume. Many regarded him as a bust, and he only lasted two seasons in the National Football League. He recorded six sacks in three starts. However, sometimes the best coaches are the ones whose playing careers did not pan out.

His career did not end after being released by the Panthers in 2011. He was what one would describe as a journeyman player in the league. He played with the San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and the Cleveland Browns. He did not put up stellar numbers for the rest of his career, totaling only one sack and four seasons. He retired from football in 2015.
I think the Panthers made a smart move by bringing him into coach the linebackers. For starters, he is familiar with the Panthers defensive culture and what they expect of their players. He knows what makes Ron Rivera tick, and that is very important. Having a staff that is on the same page can only lead to success. That was part of the problem last year. It did not seem like the coaching staff was on the same page at all times.
Secondly, he is a younger coach which means he is more in-tune with how the game is played today. Even though he played in a time where the rules were a little bit different than they are now, he still understands what it takes to win in a league that has increasingly shied away from defense. He should be able to relate to the players in a position that looks to get younger, especially following the departure of Thomas Davis. I truly believe that we will see some new faces on that side of the football come preseason camp.
It will be interesting to see if the Carolina Panthers bring in any other coaches for the 2019 season. One thing is for certain, this team will have a different look to it by the time training camp starts. I would not expect anything less, and that would be a good sign. This team needs change, and starting on the defensive side of the football is certainly a good move.
