David Sills would be good insurance pick for Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers should definitely consider picking up Sills , depending on what they do with one of their top receivers in free agency.
Mock draft season is officially underway and the Carolina Panthers have a lot of needs to fill between now and then. We have seen several scenarios on what experts think the Panthers should do with the 16th overall pick. As we all know however, there is more to the NFL Draft than just that one pick.
Bill Riccette of PanthersWire put together a mock draft that was rather interesting. In particular, I liked his third round suggestion. Wide receiver David Sills from West Virginia was Riccette’s projected pick in the third round, number 77 overall. Just looking at it from a pure draft pick standpoint, this would be a tremendous get for Carolina. They would be able to fill a potential need while not having to worry about wasting a top-tier pick on a receiver.

Sills was a touchdown-grabbing machine at West Virginia. He caught 15 in 2018 and 18 in 2017. That put him second and first in the Big Ten respectively in touchdown receptions. He also managed to amass a fair amount of yards. In 2018, he recorded 986 yards, averaging 15.2 yards per catch. In 2017, he caught 60 balls for 980 yards. When you take a look at his stats from the past two seasons, they are almost identical.
As Riccette notes, Stills might not even be around by the time the Panthers get to pick in the third round. Even still if he is available, Carolina should take him. Of course, this is all dependent on what they do with Devin Funchess. Should he be signed to a new deal, this will not even be a problem for Carolina. However, should the Panthers let the former Michigan product to walk, then there could be a need there. It will be dependent on what Carolina does in free agency. In what is sure to be one of the more difficult decisions of the offseason, it will be interesting to see what the organization does in that regard.
Stills would add another playmaker to the Carolina offense and would be yet another weapon for Cam Newton to throw to. Measuring in at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Stills has tremendous hands and speed. In particular, his runs after the catch are perhaps the most impressive part of his game. I can certainly see him fitting well in the Panthers offense.
It will be interesting to see what the Panthers end up doing this draft. One thing is for certain, it certainly will not be a dull couple of days.
