Carolina Panthers meet with quarterbacks at NFL Combine
Carolina Panthers meet with two quarterback prospects during NFL Combine.
The NFL Combine concludes today with defensive backs taking the field for drill work but news of prospect meetings is already being released. One interesting note for the Carolina Panthers is their interest in two potential quarterbacks – one that is already making headlines.
Concerned about the health of quarterback Cam Newton‘s shoulder, who was shut down entirely for the final two games last season, Carolina needs either a legitimate backup who can fill the void in his absence or a rookie to develop and potentially groom for the future starting position. After shuffling through three signal callers over the final two games, due to other injuries, it’s a safe bet the Panthers hope to find some security here – especially if they wish to remain in contention should Newton be unable to take the field at any point in the year.
According to Walter Football, the Panthers brass met with two quarterbacks over the course of the NFL Combine. Both Will Grier of West Virginia and Tyree Jackson from Buffalo are interesting options who are currently projected as mid-round targets but may have increased their stock with combine testing.

Grier, a native of Charlotte, appeared inconsistent with his throws but his confidence was far from waning. During his media availability he told reporters that he was the best prospect at the position in each of the last two draft classes.
The Panthers also used their time in order to speak with Jackson, who was scolded by retired superstar receiver and now television analyst Steve Smith, during the wide receiver portion of workouts for throwing the ball too hard.
Wanting to show off his big arm, Jackson unleashed multiple rockets during the gauntlet drill forcing many incomplete passes when receivers were hoping to show off. While Jackson impressed with his measurements, 40-yard time and other characteristics, he does need to know when touch is required in order to be successful at the next level.
Hoping to make an impression, it’s safe to say Jackson did just that for many teams, in addition to Smith, during his days in Indianapolis. If the Panthers desire another prospect to compete for a position on the roster, then either candidate could hear their name called when Carolina is on the clock next month.
The NFL Draft is scheduled for Thursday, April 25 thru Saturday, April 27 in Nashville, Tennessee.
