The Carolina Panthers added another wide receiver to their unit on Friday.

The Carolina Panthers made an intriguing move on Friday, signing wide receiver Aldrick Robinson to a one-year contract. You may recognize Robinson’s name as he has made his mark within the National Football League.

Robinson last played with the Minnesota Vikings, where efficiency was his hallmark. He caught 17 passes, five of them for touchdowns. That is not a bad touchdown to catch ratio if I do say so myself. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 2011 NFL Draft, selected in the sixth round. He has bounced around the league, and hopefully he can find a permanent home with Carolina.

This is a great move for the Carolina Panthers as it adds to their wide receiver depth. As last season proved, you can never have too many wideouts on the roster. Also of note is the fact that this fills the one spot that remained on the Carolina Panthers 90-man roster.

Robinson brings experience and speed to Charlotte. Speedy wide receivers seem to be the name of the game in the National Football League. Robinson certainly possesses that, and he could be a secret weapon of sorts. Running after the catch is one of his specialties and that should fit well with the Panthers. The first hurdle as I see it for him is surviving training camp.

This speed should be able to help the quarterback as well. All Cam Newton will have to do is throw him the ball and let him go to work.

The first test for him will be to see if he can stay with the roster come fall. The Carolina Panthers did a nice job of addressing the lack of depth at the receiver position, and there will certainly be many battles at the position. I certainly think he can make the roster as he has NFL experience that many of these undrafted free agents and other players obviously do not have. It will not be an easy thing to do, but Robinson should certainly be able to handle it.

This was an intriguing signing for Carolina. At the minimum, it gives them veteran wideout depth. You can never have too much depth in the National Football League, and the Panthers are taking that to heart. I will be interested to see how he does over the course of training camp, as this one in particular will feature a lot of new faces ready to make an impact. It should be an exciting preseason.
