Carolina Panthers: Video of Cam Newton throwing irks Ron Rivera
Controversial video of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton throwing the football surfaces.
Yes, you read that correctly. It’s early June and somehow Cam Newton remains a topic of controversy – even while rehabbing from a shoulder procedure completed in January. Fortunately, this time the dissension isn’t being targeted directly at the Carolina Panthers franchise quarterback but he is the subject of a video which surfaced online a few days ago.
As Newton continues his treatment for a return to full strength, throwing footballs was obviously going to be a step in the process. He hadn’t done so (or has he?) until recently but now there are plenty more questions surrounding his rehabilitation.
According to Jourdan Rodrigue, coach Ron Rivera was none too happy about the video. One in which the owner claimed was filmed back in 2016, after being passed around online, although The Charlotte Observer says, “signage on the fence in the background of the video matches the signage placed there by the Panthers in 2019.”
At any rate, Rivera confirmed Newton was throwing footballs again and appears to believe this video was also recently filmed.

Understandably upset, it does beg to question whether Newton has been throwing longer than the team is prepared to admit. Having surpassed the initial time off from rotator cuff surgery, back in 2017, the extended delay for a return to full football activities was raising concern.
Now we know Newton is indeed throwing regulation sized footballs and may have potentially been doing so for quite some time. Although he has yet to make throws during organized team activities (OTAs), Rivera has always seemed confident that Newton would be ready by training camp.
After guiding Carolina to a 6-2 start through the first half of 2018, Newton aggravated his shoulder injury and was not the same following a Week 10 loss at Pittsburgh. Unable to throw the football down the field, Newton was lifted twice in Hail Mary situations and ultimately shut down after six consecutive losses eliminated the team from playoff contention.
A lot is riding on Newton’s ability to rebound this season and no matter his progress, Rivera is obviously concerned about keeping it all in house.
