Carolina Panthers interestingly test available quarterback
Carolina Panthers workout free agent quarterback Luis Perez, but why?
The Carolina Panthers have a franchise quarterback in Cam Newton but following two (throwing) shoulder surgeries in less than two years time, uncertainty looms for the immediate future and beyond. By all accounts Newton has worked incredibly hard to rehab from his latest procedure and appears on track to participate in training camp but his long-term health remains an issue.
To potentially prepare for life without Newton, general manger Marty Hurney selected Charlotte native Will Grier in the third-round this past April. He joins Taylor Heinicke, who won the backup position last year during training camp and the preseason, plus Kyle Allen, the last starting signal caller to win a game for the Panthers.
Armed with three legitimate candidates to essentially battle for one position, it would appear the team has enough pieces in place to work with entering training camp and preseason play. However, the team recently invited Luis Perez for a workout and the move raises a number of questions.

If the former Alliance of American Football (AAF) and undrafted free agent quarterback signs with Carolina, it would give coaches another candidate to compete against three already on the roster. In addition, it seems to signal that Newton will at least remain somewhat limited during training camp and the preseason schedule.
Starting quarterbacks typically don’t participate too much during the preseason and perhaps Carolina simply needs another arm and body at practice, but the move may also indicate Newton isn’t as ready for a return to full participation as many have hoped.
Either way, the Panthers best chance at winning football games comes with Newton under center and protecting him during games that don’t officially count in the win/loss column isn’t a bad idea – provided he’s ready for the regular season.
If it takes adding another quarterback to the roster in order to so, then so be it.
