The Carolina Panthers were surprisingly effective in all facets of their special teams play. Kicker Joey Slye made three field goals, including a 55-yard attempt, Michael Palardy added some nice punts but it was the return game that stole the show.
Rookie wide receiver Terry Godwin had a 57-yard return to set up the first Carolina touchdown, just three plays later. Down at the time, the return sparked the Panthers and not only did they reclaim the lead but also held it for the remainder of the game.
Godwin followed with a 22-yard return on his next try before being pulled in an effort to get others an opportunity. Rashad Ross also had a return for over 20 yards as overall Carolina averaged 19.6 yards on kickoff and punt returns with 177 total yards accumulated on special teams.
The Panthers continue preseason play next Friday night at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, against the Buffalo Bills.
