Carolina Panthers add free agent receiver Robby Anderson, who played collegiate ball under Matt Rhule.

The Carolina Panthers roster restructuring continues this offseason as former No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton was released. Newton, who rarely received much help in the receiver category – especially through free agency – has to be amused by the Panthers willingness to target one of the top wide receivers available this offseason.

However, the move may have just as much to do with new coach Matt Rhule wanting to organize some familiarity within the locker room for how he handles such things as meetings, practices, and game preparation.

Free agent Robby Anderson signed a two-year, $20 million contract and joins a room full of potential. With D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel continually developing into significant targets, Anderson also figures to be in the mix after some time with the New York Jets.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent, Anderson proved to be a deep threat with serious potential despite the Jets recent struggles. Catching 52 passes last season for 779 yards and five touchdowns, Anderson was likely targeted as much for his skill as familiarity with Rhule.

Rhule was responsible for Anderson switching from defensive back to receiver while at Temple and following a year off due to academic suspension, Anderson returned completing his senior season and finishing second in receptions and yards for Temple receivers – in only 24 games.

Continuing to build on offense, the Panthers will also be reuniting Anderson with his collegiate quarterback, P.J. Walker. Signed from the XFL, Walker’s addition led to Carolina trading backup Kyle Allen and along with Teddy Bridgewater and second-year signal caller Will Grier should now be set at the quarterback position.

Rhule, who made a name for himself by taking programs from obscurity to prominence at the collegiate level is expected to instill the same type of foundation while structuring the Panthers for sustained success.

The goal of owner David Tepper, having some guys familiar with Rhule should help in this process.
