Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette made a pitch to former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to join the franchise.

Cam Newton might not be without a team for too much longer if Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette has his way.

The former LSU standout has made no secret of his desire for the team to bring in the former Carolina Panthers signal-caller, who was released by the organization following the acquisition of Teddy Bridgewater from the New Orleans Saints.

The Jaguars recently traded Nick Foles to the Chicago Bears after just one season under center. This has left second-year player Gardner Minshew as the favorite to take the No.1 spot in 2020.

Fournette wants more competition in the Jacksonville quarterback room and feels like for 2015 Most Valuable Player would bring a lot to the organization.

The back appeared on ESPSN debate show First Take today and had this to say on Newton.

"“I feel like, you know, Cam went to the Super Bowl, you know, he’s a great guy. I’ve been knowing Cam for a minute now. Like I told some people that talked to me, I told them it’s no disrespect to [Gardner] Minshew. I’m just trying to get in the best position as a team so that we can win. That’s all that was about, just a friendly competition, because, you know, that bring out the best in people.”"

Newton currently has few options regarding a starting role in the NFL given the timing of his departure from Carolina. Minshew became a cult-hero with the Jaguars’ fanbase after bursting into the limelight during his first six games on his way to 1,976 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Things did not go according to plan for the quarterback during the latter stages of the season. Minshew notched 1,295 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions over his final six games.

Trading Foles might have been a huge vote of confidence for the player. But the Jaguars are going to need more if they want to get back into playoff contention and Newton is a wildcard they might be worth the risk if the price is right.
