Carolina Panthers: Interest shown in Utah LB Francis Bernard
By Dean Jones
What would Bernard bring to the Panthers?
Francis Bernard is an active player that has some good traits to build on when he makes it to the pros. A standout feature of his game is a superb quick burst that allows him to get to the point of attack impact plays immediately.
He is not afraid to put big hits on opposing players and possesses quicker feet than you would expect. That being said, Bernard is a work in progress, and putting too much pressure on his shoulder early would hamper his overall development considerably.
It would be a huge surprise if Bernard eventually filled the void left by Luke Kuechly. But there is plenty of encouraging signs for the player who had a good Senior Bowl earlier this year to further enhance his NFL Draft hopes.
Getting off blocks is something Bernard has trouble with on occasions. This is an area of his game that is going to need vast improvement if he is going to thrive in the NFL.
Playing through contact is another trait of his game that needs brushing up. But Bernard is a hard worker who has plenty of energy on the field.
This all bodes well to being coached up to suit a specific scheme at the next level. What he lacks in game-changing ability, he more than makes up for in effort and perseverance.
There isn’t a great deal of pressure on the Panthers to make the playoffs in 2020 in the midst of a roster overhaul. Bernard would be an intriguing option to bring in and develop to ensure he is ready to make an impression when the team is in a better position to contend.
