3 free agent guards the Panthers could sign post-NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Mike Person
Another eye-catching offensive guard available on the free-agent market is Mike Person. The former San Francisco 49er is best when in pass protection and is a formidable proposition to shift off the block when he is performing at a high level.
Person struggled mightily in the Niners’ Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which was the catalyst behind his release. But the player was dealing with some injury problems and there is a good chance he can bounce back.
What Person lacks in accomplished blocking on running downs, the player more than makes up for when protecting the quarterback. He has fantastic footwork for a man his size and his hand placement are everything you would expect of a veteran operating at a high level.
The Carolina Panthers’ offensive line would instantly improve with Person’s arrival. He is still owed $2.5 million by the Niners in 2020, so it would not break the bank to acquire him.
This is an intriguing proposition and one the Panthers should consider. Putting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in the firing line is not going to do the team’s chances of having a moderately successful season any good. Adding Person would solidify one guard position and if he had rid himself of niggling injuries, this could be an exciting pickup for the organization.
