Panthers News: Carolina boosted their offensive line with the signing of Michael Schofield, but what can the franchise expect from the guard in 2020?

It came as no surprise that the Carolina Panthers moved quickly to bring in another veteran offensive lineman after failing to acquire one in the NFL Draft.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the franchise has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with guard Michael Schofield, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers and is a seasoned veteran with five years’ experience in the NFL.

Schofield’s arrival is a significant boost to the Panthers, who traded Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner to the Chargers in exchange for left tackle Russell Okung. They did sign former third-round pick John Miller to a one-year deal worth $4 million. But the depth was a real concern prior to their latest acquisition.

The player performed incredibly well for the Chargers in 2019, so it was somewhat surprising they did not bring him back. Schofield was on the field for every single offensive snap and gave away just one sack during the campaign.

He is also incredibly disciplined, with just one penalty accounted for last term. Schofield is a solid interior presence in the run game and has good hand placement that makes him an asset on passing downs. This is something the Panthers are no doubt craving as Turner leaves some big shoes to fill.

This will also give the Panthers a player will plenty of experience, something that is badly needed as they look to blend in a wealth of new faces and young college recruits.
