What could Reed bring to the Carolina Panthers?

Although Jordan Reed missed the entire 2019 season due to complications in the concussion protocol. He is a viable option for the Carolina Panthers if they are looking to add a veteran at the tight end position.

The former third-round pick has been a dependable catching presence over the middle during his career. Reed also has the capability to break off a big play and is a significant threat in the red zone.

This is something the Panthers need from the position after the team and Greg Olsen went their separate ways. Reed has attained 329 receptions, 3,371 receiving yards, and 24 touchdowns during his career. He also boasts an impressive yards-per-catch average of 10.4

Health is a real concern for any organization looking to take him on. The current coronavirus pandemic social distancing measures leave it difficult for independent medical evaluations, which could be a big reason Reed is still on the market.

Bringing the player in on a one-year, prove-it deal at minimal cost is a win-win situation for both parties. If the Panthers went this particular route, they would be getting a player with fantastic hands and good footwork that would be a huge asset to the franchise if back to his best.

Reed is still only 29-years-old and the rest last season will have done his recuperation the world of good. One critical element will be just what another big hit will do for his prospects and long-term career aspirations after seven known concussion cases.

It represents a considerable gamble from the Panthers’ perspective. But one that could come with high reward. If Ian Thomas does not reach expectations, a contingency plan will need to be in place. The Panthers might decide that Seth Devalve is a good enough second option. However, Reed is a definite upgrade providing the concussions are no longer troubling him.
