Having a player going into the final year of his contract brings its own complications. If the Panthers can agree to terms with Samuel it will go wonders for his concentration and it also represents a huge vote of confidence in the wideout.
Samuel had the best season of his career to date in 2019 after a frustrating series of niggling injuries. He provided a dependable presence across the middle on intermediate routes and also has the potential to break off the odd big play with the ball in his hands.
That is something Teddy Bridgewater is going to need after the Panthers lost Greg Olsen in free agency. It is expected to be a difficult season of transition for the team and the more points they can get on the board, the better their young defense might fare going forward.
Not trading the former second-round pick forces the Panthers’ hand somewhat. They will not want to lose the player for anything in free agency and are unlikely to pay him the franchise of transition tag to keep him around.
Getting an extension sorted out in good time provides the Panthers will one of the best No. 3 wide receiver options in the NFL. It also gives Samuel a security blanket that would allow him to focus on matters on the field.
