What comes next for the Panthers’ at cornerback?

The Carolina Panthers might have to go with what they currently have at cornerback in 2020. They lost No. 1 option James Bradberry to the New York Giants and do not have the financial clout currently to bring in a proven veteran who can guarantee production.

The organization does hold out hope that Donte Jackson can fill the void left by Bradberry with more time on the field. He has shown glimpses of promise during his time with the franchise so far. And there could be even more to come with extra responsibility on his shoulders.

Troy Pride Jr. is also going to get a chance to show what he is capable of from the outset. The former Notre Dame speedster does need to work on certain areas of his game. But if he can sort out these kinks than the Carolina Panthers could have a steal on their hands.

They also have the added option of using second-rounder Jeremy Chinn as their slot cornerback. The Southern Illinois product is a supreme athlete and has no trouble whatsoever covering tight ends or receivers across the middle.

Corn Elder and Cole Luke are both fighting for a place in the rotation during training camp. And it remains to be seen whether seventh-round pick Stantley Thomas-Oliver III can make his presence felt on the roster despite his limited experience operating at cornerback.

Someone like Logan Ryan would undoubtedly help the Panthers. But the simple fact is the organization is not in a position to offer him anywhere near to the money the player is reportedly asking for.

It is going to be a baptism of fire for the Panthers’ young secondary in 2020. And if they fail to impress, Carolina should be in a better position to attract a big-name signing during free agency next year.
