Panthers defense: 4 players under pressure to perform in 2020
By Dean Jones
Shaq Thompson
Now that Luke Kuechly is no longer on the Carolina Panthers defense. Shaq Thompson is arguably the most talented linebacker on the roster and needs to showcase his immense skill set more prominently in 2020.
The former first-round pick has been a tremendous asset to the Panthers defense during his time with the organization. Although the team itself disappointed once again in 2019, Thompson still managed to attain 109 combined tackles, 75 solo tackles, three sacks, and three pass deflections.
With the Panthers defense set to move back to a 4-3 base going forward. This should open up more opportunities for Thompson to get to the quarterback next season.
The franchise has two space eaters on the defensive line interior and some explosive pass-rushers on the outside. All this bodes well for a player that will count $7.2 million against Carolina’s salary cap in 2020.
Thompson’s salary is set to skyrocket after this season. But the Panthers do have an out regarding his deal in 2021 if he does not reach expectations. This would save them around $16 million overall and the money involved gives the player another added incentive to prove he is an indispensable member of the Panthers defense.
He has all the talent in the world to make this happen. And Thompson has the potential to be the Panthers’ most productive player on defense next season.
