The Carolina Panthers have some big decisions still to come in order to make them a contender. One bold move they could make is offering the New York Jets an offer they can’t refuse for standout safety Jamal Adams.
The Pro Bowler is reportedly disgruntled with the organization as contract talks reached an impasse. And Adams has muttered displeasure as he is either looks for a multi-million-dollar deal with the Jets or elsewhere.
Should Adams become available, then the interest would be extremely high. The Carolina Panthers would be significantly bolstered by the presence of Adams in an area of the field that represents some concern ahead of training camp.
There is every chance the Panthers have struck gold with second-round pick Jeremy Chinn. Although defensive coordinator Phil Snow might opt to use the player as a slot cornerback during the early stages of his development.
They also took Kenny Robinson in the fifth-round, who does have some upside. But it remains to be seen whether his successful exploits in the XFL will make the transition to the big leagues.
The Panthers were content enough with the production of Tre Boston to give him a three-year extension worth $18 million this offseason. And they are up against it from a salary cap perspective. So the team would not be able to offer Adams the sort of money he is looking for until he hits the free-agent market.
That being said, they could always put the franchise tag on Adams to prevent him from leaving elsewhere. He is a game-changing player on the backend who has the scope to transform the Panthers from the safety spot.
The Jets remain steadfast in their refusal to consider offers for Adams. But here are three scenarios that could tempt them into a deal.
