Carolina Panthers balance sheet: The verdict
The Carolina Panthers defense might not appear to be better next season. But that doesn’t mean their long-term prospects haven’t been given a tremendous boost
Much will depend on how players coming in perform. And the likes of Donte Jackson and Brian Burns will also be expected to raise their respective games in more prominent leadership roles.
All eyes will especially be on Jackson in 2020. The cornerback has undoubted potential. But he will now come up against some of the best wide receivers in the NFL and how he copes will be pivotal for the organization.
Having veteran defensive tackle Kawann Short back to full health is another big boost. Having him in the line up will almost feel like a new signing. And the Pro Bowler can also ease Derrick Brown’s transition into the pros in addition to providing solid production on the field.
Given the high-octane offenses that the Panthers will be coming up against next season. Things might get worse before they get better. It is going to be a steep learning curve for all involved. But if they can emerge from the campaign with encouraging signs, that is all Carolina’s coaching staff is probably looking for at the present time.
Throwing rookie players in at the deep end is a feast or famine proposition. Some handle it better than others. But the Panthers drafted athletic and versatile prospects that could help the team in a number of different ways.
How this group comes together in a short space of time is ultimately going to determine just how much we can expect from them in 2020. It promises to be a bumpy ride. But one that Carolina’s young core can emerge from with some credit.
