Panthers: 3 problems Teddy Bridgewater must overcome in 2020
By Dean Jones
1. Playing in Cam Newton’s shadow
Perhaps the biggest hurdle facing Teddy Bridgewater during his first season with the Carolina Panthers is playing in the shadow of Cam Newton. The iconic figure was released by the franchise more than two months ago. But it still leaves a sour taste in the mouth both with the player and large sections of the fanbase.
Many thought the 2015 NFL MVP should have been given another opportunity to prove he was capable of leading the Panthers back to prominence following two frustrating seasons. He has certainly looked the part in workout posts on social media. But with a new regime comes different ideas and this left Newton on the outside looking in.
The truth of the matter is that no matter how well Bridgewater does in Carolina during his time with the organization, it won’t be enough for some. The comparisons between himself and Newton will be a prominent feature in discussions as the campaign progresses. And the onus will be on the former New Orleans Saint to prove that he is more than ready for such a challenge.
It will not be easy, that much is certain. The Panthers might be forced to put some lofty points on the board given their young and relatively inexperienced defense. And even that might not guide them to a .500 record of better.
Bridgewater is now firmly in the spotlight. And this will only increase if Newton finds himself under center for another franchise next season.
