Carolina Panthers: 4 big takeaways from Phil Snow’s virtual presser
By Dean Jones
Versatility is key for the Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers made no secret of bringing in defensive players that were athletic and versatile. This was something the organization did with almost every incoming player vis free agency or the NFL Draft. And Phil Snow is clearly of the mindset that this is going to benefit the team going forward.
What the Panthers might lack in veteran experience, they definitely make up for in their dynamic potential. This group is going to be fun to watch., But whether that can translate to production on the field is another matter entirely.
This is something that Carolina is going to utilize to its fullest extent in their secondary. The likes of Jeremy Chinn, Kenny Robinson, and Juston Burris have the ability to come down to the second level if needed. And this is clearly an attractive proposition for Snow.
"“When we talk about defensive backs, we tell them they’re DBs. They can play anywhere. Those are the types of guys we’re interested in. I’ll give you an example: Juston Burris has also played nickel in the National Football League, so he has a lot of value. He can play in the back row and play nickel. Jeremy Chinn, I think there were three guys in the draft like Jeremy, Jeremy being one of the three. There are going to be multiple things we can do with him. We have (EDGE rusher) Brian Burns. He is kind of a unique guy. He’s long, he can move, and you can do different things with him. So I think it’s really important that we find players that can do more than one thing.”"
This sort of versatility is welcome in today’s NFL. Given how offenses like to get the ball downfield at the earliest opportunity. Having guys that can contribute in different areas is going to take some of the pressure off them to perform in one position consistently. And this might do wonders for their chances to prove the doubters wrong.
