Carolina Panthers Problem No. 3: The last chance saloon pressure
There appears to be little doubt that this is Eli Apple’s last chance to prove himself as a starting cornerback. He has failed to produce the goods so far. And if the player performs poorly once again with the Carolina Panthers, it could see him end up on the free-agent scrapheap for good.
This is a high stakes season upcoming for Apple. And having this extra pressure on their shoulders could go one of two ways. Either he thrives and makes a success of his final opportunity. Or the corner wilts under the pressure and fails to deliver.
The Panthers will be hoping that the latter comes into play. The front office appears confident that they can finally get the most out of Apple’s impressive skill set. But there is a chance that the player has already passed the point of no return.
It is going to be a case of sink or swim for Apple. And how he performs in the face of what is expected to be sustained and consistent pressure will ultimately determine his fortunes.
Apple faces a huge test of character next season. Opposing teams will now that he will be playing with an increased level of scrutiny. And this is something they are sure to try and exploit early and often during games.
The player has given up 183 receptions from 300 targets during his career to date. Apple has it all to do in the last chance saloon. And his career path in 2021 and beyond will come down to how the corner rises to the occasion.
