Russell Okung – Carolina Panthers OT

  • Current base salary – $13 million ($13 million cap)
  • Team priority – Low

Russell Okung was a big-time trade acquisition by the Carolina Panthers prior to free agency. The veteran left tackle was set to provide assured blindside protection that was sorely missing in 2019 and although he did perform well when in the lineup, the player’s lack of ability to stay healthy was a preseason concern that definitely came to fruition.

Okung turned out just seven games and featured in 39 percent of Carolina’s offensive snaps this season. That is simply not good enough for someone who made a base salary of $13 million and it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world to see the Panthers cut their losses with the Super Bowl-winner after just one year.

Getting this sort of money off the books – together with removing Trai Turner’s deal – played a big factor in their decision to move for Okung. The left tackle is still more than capable, but considering the youth movement currently transpiring in Carolina, bringing him back when financial resources are at a premium just doesn’t seem feasible.

There is also the prospect of Okung walking away from the game entirely.

The two-time Pro Bowler was reportedly contemplating retirement last summer due to COVID-19 health concerns. But one would think that a potential retirement in the coming weeks is a realistic prospect considering the wear and tear of a prolonged career is starting to take its toll.
