Pharoh Cooper – Carolina Panthers WR/KR

There was plenty of excitement when Pharoh Cooper decided to join the Carolina Panthers in free agency. The wide receiver/kick returner came into the organization on the back of an eye-catching 2019 season with the Arizona Cardinals and there appeared to be an opening to make a notable impression behind the top-three wide receiver options.

However, Cooper was an afterthought in the passing game and was targeted just eight times over the course of the season. This was a major disappointment whichever way one looks at it and although he did manage to record 620 yards returning kicks, more was probably expected.

Cooper is out of contract this offseason and it would be a big surprise if the player is brought back. It was bemusing to see so few targets coming his way, which was a damning indictment of the coaching staff’s thoughts regarding his ability to become a reliable pass-catcher.

The former South Carolina standout has a specialist skillset that should ensure he gets an opportunity elsewhere.

But that shouldn’t be with the Panthers.

They might have to bring in some additional depth at the wideout spot if Brandon Zylstra and Curtis Samuel also depart this spring. But Cooper’s time with Carolina is likely to be a one and done deal.
