Running back

Although the Carolina Panthers might lose Mike Davis to free agency considering how well he performed in Christian McCaffrey‘s absence, they shouldn’t go looking into the free-agent pool for a potential replacement. Good players at the position are obviously available, but they will not be cheap and the organization has more pressing priorities in their pursuit of progression.

McCaffrey is set to make a full return to health and appears raring to go if his offseason workout videos are any indication. Getting the All-Pro back and firing on all cylinders is going to be a massive boost to a talented offense that could also be saying goodbye to do-it-all wide receiver Curtis Samuel this spring.

The Panthers have Trenton Cannon, Rodney Smith, and Reggie Bonnafon to boost the depth chart, who have all shown some signs of life at various stages. There are also some prospects that could be available in the later rounds that could make a difference, so spending money Carolina doesn’t have on a backup when there are so many alternatives has the potential to compromise other positions.

Having a primary No. 2 that can step in at a moment’s notice in the event McCaffrey was forced to miss any more time is essential. But the Panthers simply have too many needs to put this high on their list of priorities in the current financial climate.
