4 Carolina Panthers free agents who will get paid too much in 2021
By Dean Jones
Which current free agents on the Carolina Panthers could get paid too much for their services in the coming days?
The free-agent frenzy has officially gripped the NFL. Many major moves have already been made by teams across the league, although the Carolina Panthers only two signings haven’t exactly been well received by fans looking for the organization to make a much more eye-catching statement than Pat Elflein and Cam Erving.
General manager Scott Fitterer said he was going to take a patient approach, which was a big change in tune from the “in on every deal” claims made in his introductory press conference.
Financial resources are at a premium where the Panthers are concerned and their lack of expenditure so far could be down to the fact they are still preparing to go all-in to land Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans in the not-too-distant future.
Carolina Panthers’ roster will look much different in 2021.
We are into the second day of the official legal tampering period, so there is a long way to go yet. But it already looks like Carolina’s roster is going to look far different than the one that ended the 2020 campaign with a 5-11 record for the second straight year.
Former roster members are already beginning to find new homes. On this subject, we took a look at four Panthers players who will probably get paid too much by another team at some stage in free agency.
Player No. 1
Kawann Short – DT
A veteran Pro Bowler of proven quality like Kawann Short is always going to be a hot commodity for contending teams looking for that extra edge to boost their playoff chances. Although the defensive tackle has missed the best part of two seasons through injury, providing there are no further complications he’d be a shrewd pickup.
Much will depend on how the market plays out in the coming days. The Carolina Panthers have shown a desire to bring Short back at the right price. But the player might see this as an opportunity to finish his outstanding contender on a team capable of challenging for a Super Bowl.
Teams do tend to overpay for players like Short in free agency in a normal offseason. However, considering his recent troubles staying healthy it is a massive gamble to make.
